      Kristine Sisk

It was quite a “learning” morning. If I wanted to identify subjects learned it included biology, ecology, geography, geology, math, species identification, measurements, writing, vocabulary, art, physics, social skills, etc. (I’m sure I’m missing something).
The point is, I could feel awfully smug about what she did in a short amount of time. “Look at all that learning”! (Cursive! That’s like one of those things they don’t even teach in school anymore)
Yesterday, on the other hand, from the moment she woke up until almost the moment she went to sleep, she watched My Little Pony. She’s been working her way through all 6 seasons that are on Myassignmenthelp fake. She knows every character, what they’re classified as, and what their powers are. I watched with her for a good portion of the day. We’re all getting over a cold and the rest and cuddles werenice. I brought her meals and snacks by the tv and she stayed there almost all day.
It would be so easy for me to compare the two days and judge today with more weight than yesterday. After all, she learned so much today and just watched a tv show all day yesterday!
But that’s not how unschooling works. One activity or type of activity doesn’t hold more weight or is more “educational” than another.
Have you ever sat down and truly watched My Little Pony? It’s a great show! No wonder it has such a fan following from girls and boys, children and adults. The storyline and characters are really interesting. They reference history, literature, pop culture, and music. Not to mention the show is called “Friendship is Magic” and a large part of it is about maintaining friendships and managing social situations with a variety of different types of ponies. I also appreciate that the characters have a full range of emotions and are allowed to express the big feelings that kids have too. They express them and work through them together.
But even if My Little Pony had none of those positive attributes and it only brought DinoGirl5 immense joy, that would be enough. I’m sure she learned plenty while watching all day, but most importantly she did something that brings her joy.
It’s easy to slip back into the schoolish mindset that places academic/educational things above everything else. But learning really does happen all the time.
