Play traditional Andean instruments such as the bombo drum, siku panpipe, quena flute, and charango, a small stringed instrument customarily made from an armadillo shell. Afterwards, visit the Latin America Gallery to learn more and see them played in MIM’s exhibit videos.

      Siku Craft
      9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Make your own siku, also known as a panpipe or raft flute. Sikus are found all over the Andes and are traditionally played in pairs. Craft one and then try your hand at making music with your friends and family.

      Andean Music Performance
      10:30–11:15 a.m.
Experience the indigenous music of the Andes with a performance by talented Phoenix-based band Los Waukis Andinos. “Los Waukis” means “the brothers” in the Quechua language—a phrase that reflects the diversity of backgrounds and influences of the band members, who hail from Peru, Bolivia, and Mexico, yet who are united in their shared love for the music of the Andes.

Since 1995, Chile Canta y Baila has traveled all over Arizona sharing the South American country’s heritage through song and dance, with support from the Chilean Cultural Center of Arizona. Don’t miss this group’s vibrant performance, as they’ll be sure to make you want to get up to dance!

Curator Talk: Musical Cultures and Instruments of the Andes
      2:15–3:00 p.m.
The Andes region has one of the richest histories of musical instruments in the world. Join Dr. Daniel Piper, MIM’s curator for Latin America and the Caribbean, for a fascinating presentation that explores Andean instruments of historical and living cultures, drawing from MIM’s extensive Andean collection and animated by stories from his recent trip to Peru.

      Venezuelan Folk Music Performance
