      EVENT DETAILS
Changing Hands Writing Workshop with Cynthia Schwartzberg Edlow: Vision and Revision: The Skill of Refining Your Poem to Its Best

Cynthia Schwartzberg Edlow leads a two-session craft workshop in which attendees read and discuss contemporary poems, concentrating on revealing the finer points of writing.  Session 1 - November 5 - Balancing imagery and abstraction in a poem is an advanced skill that poets learn by close reading and intense writing practice. Using contemporary poetry handouts distributed to participants, Edlow leads class discussion and examination of established poets’ methodologies and poetic devices in their work. This workshop will focus on the drafted poem, and consider specific categorical alterations to bring greater depth and meaning to the poem, and widen the poet’s management with the craft. Please bring pen, paper, and fourteen copies of a poem draft that fits on one page. Session 2 - November 12 - Emphasis will be placed on the use of particular imagery, punctuation, verb choice, lineation, and tense. Participants will have brought to workshop a draft from home for discussion. Fellow participants will have had one week to apply the principles of alteration toward greater depth of poetic nuance and creating “lightning on the page.” Class time will be spent with Edlow’s guidance in suggestions and advice, and with participants’ reading aloud and sharing their best constructive comments of each other’s written work. WORKSHOP DETAILS Cost: $40 for two sessions, November 5 and 12. No refunds within one day of the event.   ABOUT THE HOST CYNTHIA SCHWARTZBERG EDLOW is the author of The Day Judge Spencer Learned the Power of Metaphor and Horn Section All Day Every Day (Salmon Poetry, 2012, and 2018, respectively).
