Arizona Winds Concert Band Presents "Broadway Showstoppers"

The popular Glendale-based Arizona Winds has released details for its upcoming April 2nd concert to be held at 3:00 p.m. at Cactus High School, 6330 W. Greenway Rd in Glendale. The theme for the free concert is “Broadway Showstoppers”, and the program will feature many of the most memorable tunes from over a century of Broadway musicals by composers Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, Lerner and Loewe, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Cole Porter and George Gershwin.
Local vocalist Anna Nyhart will return to the Arizona Winds’ stage after her February debut with the band in their exciting “From the Heart and All That Jazz” concert. The 2011 graduate of Arizona Christian University is making a name for herself in the Phoenix music scene with her notable roles as Marian Paroo in "The Music Man," Jane Eyre in "Jane Eyre the Musical," and Mabel in "Pirates of Penzance", as well as her regular performances with the Arizona Opera Company.
“Anna is a very gifted young entertainer”, noted the band’s Music Director and Director, Lt Colonel (Ret.) Richard Shelton. And he should know, having spent 25 years as a United States Air Force Band commander and conductor entertaining audiences all over the world and working with some America’s best and brightest talent. “We are just thrilled to be working with such a wonderfully talented vocalist. Anna packs a very mature, dynamic and beautiful soprano voice in that small frame of hers and it never fails to surprise and delight the audience”, noted Colonel Shelton. Anna will sing a medley of Cole Porter tunes that includes “Anything Goes”, “So Easy to Love”, “All of You”, “From This Moment On”, “Night and Day” and others; “Summertime” from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess; “I Feel Pretty”, “Tonight” and “One Hand, One Heart” from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story; and a special arrangement of “You Are My Sunshine”.
Along with several medley’s from various popular Broadway productions, the band will feature its trumpet section in “Blow, Gabriel Blow” from Cole Porter’s musical Anything Goes, and will cap off the program with a very special unpublished arrangement of Irving Berlin’s “No Biz Like Show Biz” arranged by Hollywood film composer and Pulitzer Prize nominee Ira Hearshen.
The Arizona Winds’ season concludes on May 21st with an Armed Forces tribute called “American Heroes” featuring the music of John Williams, John Philip Sousa, Sammy Nestico, Julie Giroux and film composer Bruce Broughton.
Concerts are Sundays at 3:00 p.m. and admission is free. Invite your friends and be a part of something exciting!
